News & Updates

A rhinoplasty or more commonly known as a nose job is the most popular facial cosmetic surgical procedure performed in the United Sates. So, how does rhinoplasty actually work? Generally, the procedure begins with incisions in the nasal region. Then, Dr. Russo will proceed by sculpting the bone and cartilage of the nose. Once the desired results are achieved, the incisions are closed and the nose is secured with bandages and cast.

TIPS FOR RHINOPLASTY RECOVERY - Female photo Since a rhinoplasty procedure requires at least a month of recovery, Dr. Russo  advises prospective patients to plan ahead to make the recovery period as easy as  possible for themselves. Below, we will highlight some tips to having a safe and  quick recovery.

Immediately after the surgery, the effects of anesthesia coupled with everything else  will make driving dangerous and almost impossible for you for 24-48 hours. That’s  why it is crucial to pre-arrange with a friend or a relative to drive you home safely.  It’s also important for the same reasons to have a responsible person with you for  the first 24 hours.

Secondly, because you will be feeling a certain amount of discomfort after surgery, it  is advised that you have your medication at hand so any pain and swelling can be  minimized. The best relief of post-op discomfort is provided by head elevation and the application of iced water compresses.

Lastly, your nose will now be very sensitive. So, be sure to choose clothes are buttoned up on the front and avoid anything that needs to be slipped over your head.

Tips for a Speedy Recovery

  • Sleep with your head elevated: This sleeping posture can help reduce swelling. Dr. Russo recommends his patients to sleep in a recliner or on two to three pillows. It is also be to sleep on your back to avoid bumping your fragile nose on anything.
  • Do not put pressure on the nose: The weeks following your rhinoplasty your nose has not set yet. It is important to avoid blowing your nose, squeezing it, or wearing glasses/sunglasses.
  • Keep your bandages dry: Bandages should be kept dry at all times to prevent any infections. Showering/bathing should be from the neck down.
  • Keep a low salt diet: Avoiding salt will decrease swelling as well as prevent your body from retaining fluids. Increase your fluid intake can also help with reduction swelling.
  • Wear sunscreen: Sunscreen provides an additional layer of protection to the sensitive nose post-surgery. Dr. Russo recommends wearing sunscreen even during the winter time.
