Mouth and Lips
A subnasal lip lift is performed to shorten the length of the upper lip. Also referred to as an upper lip lift, upper lip shortening, subnasal lip lift, or a bullhorn lip lift, this procedure can dramatically improve facial harmony by correcting the length and proportion of the upper lip and subnasal area. A subnasal lip lift can also improve the shape of the upper lip and give it a fuller, poutier appearance.
Candidates for Subnasal Lip Lift
People who are interested in a subnasal lip lift are concerned about the length of their upper lip (the area between the top of the lips and the base of the nose) in proportion to the rest of their face. A long upper lip is often seen in older patients who have an elongated upper lip as a result of the aging process. Younger patients may also feel concerned about the length of their upper lip, particularly if the shape of the lip is hiding the teeth from showing while talking or smiling. Candidates for a lip lift must also be in good overall health and have realistic expectations about the surgery.
Subnasal Lip Lift Process
When performing subnasal lip lifts on his Champaign-Urbana patients, Dr. Russo utilizes popular techniques known as the bullhorn lip lift, which refers to the shape of the incision he makes during the surgery. At the beginning of the procedure, Dr. Russo administers a local anesthetic and uses a pen to indicate where the incision will be made. He then makes a bullhorn-shaped incision just below the nostrils and removes the entire piece of skin. Once the excess skin is removed, the sutures the wound closed, which shortens the upper lip area. As a highly experienced plastic surgeon, Dr. Russo utilizes several suturing techniques to ensure the skin is perfectly aligned so that scarring will be minimal. The scar is at the border of the nasal base and lip and is usually imperceptible.
Recovery Process
Patients are usually able to return home immediately after a subnasal lip lift. It is normal for moderate swelling to last about 4 days. Cold compresses can be used to minimize swelling and pain relievers will be prescribed to manage any pain. After 5 days, patients return to our Champaign office so that Dr. Russo can remove the stitches. Most patients feel comfortable appearing in public within 7 days of their surgery, although a small amount of swelling can linger for up to 3 months. After the initial healing phase, it is important to apply sunscreen to the wound for at least 6 months to prevent a visible scar from forming.
