PermaLip Implants
PermaLip is an implant that can be surgically inserted to augment the lips. FDA-approved PermaLip implants are composed of a solid silicone material that cannot rupture. Although designed to provide a long-term enhancement, PermaLip implants can be removed if desired. Its unique coating prevents tissue from growing into the implants and minimizes the development of scar tissue. Board Certified Facial and Reconstructive Surgeon Dr. Ronald Russo is pleased to offer PermaLip implants at Rejuvenis Beauty in Champaign, Illinois.
The PermaLip implant procedure is straight-forward, minimally-invasive and can be completed in about 15 minutes. To begin the procedure, a local anesthetic will be administered to numb the lip area. Dr. Russo will then make two small incisions, one at the corner of the upper lip and another at the corner of the lower lip. The implants are then inserted. After the implants have been placed and centered, Dr. Russo will close the incisions with absorbable sutures.

PermaLip implants are available in a variety of sizes. They are molded to the natural shape of the lip to compliment each patient individually. Prior to your appointment, Dr. Russo will discuss the appropriate sizing with you, taking care to consider the balance of your facial features. His goal is to achieve the most natural-looking results.
Dr. Russo can perform PermaLip implants as a stand-alone outpatient procedure or as part of a surgical procedure, such as a lower facelift.
After the implants have been placed, you should expect some bruising and significant swelling. It is normal for the swelling to appear exaggerated for about 3 to 4 days. During the initial recovery period, you may have trouble speaking, eating, drinking, and moving your mouth. The bruising usually subsides within a week. Although swelling and bruising will improve within about 7-8 days, lip sensitivity to pressure typically persists for about two weeks. For those seeking lip augmentation, the short-term discomfort is minor when compared to the long-term benefit. Patients can look forward to permanently fuller lips.
PermaLip implants are generally considered a safe procedure. PermaLip implants carry some risks, including infection and scarring at the insertion points. To reduce the chance of infection, antibiotic medication is generally prescribed after the procedure.
The ideal PermaLip candidate is generally healthy and has realistic expectations. You may want to consider PermaLip implants if you would like fuller more shapely lips or are seeking lip enhancement without major surgery.
If you have a skin infection around the mouth, such as active acne or cold sores, you should wait until the condition clears before considering PermaLip. If you have a history of poor healing or chronic infections, PermaLip implants may not be right for you.
